I've alway found editorial work to be fun and challenging. Often the authors I'm drawing for have very specific points they want illustrated. My pieces speak to and illustrate their accompanying text and ideas on an intelligent, entertaining and often humorous level. The Evolution of a Magazine Cover These are the actual notes I took when meeting with the Editor & Chief, Art Director, and Production Manager of Portable Design Magazine to decide on a cover for the next month's issue. We decided on a concept that incorporated a mechanic under the hood of a cell phone working on the technology.
I proceeded with two different layouts which I drew in pencil on B&W templates of the magazine cover. These sketches I emailed out to everyone at the initial meeting. The sketch on the right was the favorite.
Next, I start fleshing it out with color. One of the major reasons I elected this green color pallet is quite simply to make it different in color from the last few issues. I simply scaned the scetch and add color digitally to achieve colors close to what I think will be great. The color rough on the left is then emailed to everyone to make sure we are all on the same page. The last phase is to draw the final art. I draw entire piece in Adobe Illustrator, then import it to Adobe Photoshop for the suttle light and shading effects. The new issue has arrived.
